Designers from Studio RAP have partnered with Arup engineers to develop a high-tech auditorium wall covering in the new theater of Rotterdam with ideal acoustic properties

A new Theater Zuidplein, designed by the architectural bureau De Zwarte Hond, has opened in Rotterdam. It is located in the Hart van Zuid district and is a simple geometric building with stone facades and an unusual “canopy” from the side of the street. This piece is clad in anodized aluminum with an engraving that reflects sunlight during the day and illuminates beautifully at night.
The facade of the theater in Rotterdam curves outward.
Part of the facade is covered with anodized aluminum.
Inside the theater building there are two auditoriums, a library and a restaurant. Several studios were involved in interior design. The lobby was designed by the Buro M2R bureau: it is conceived as the “living room” of the new urban area, where people come to chat with neighbors, meet friends and relax.
There is a library in the theater.
But the main thing awaits visitors further & nbsp; – we are talking about unusual auditoriums, the project of which was implemented by the experimental studio RAP together with the engineers of the Arup company. The walls are covered with unusual 3D cladding. Using digital technology, the designers have developed a multifaceted volumetric surface that has ideal acoustic properties for all kinds of performances. More than six thousand triangles made of aluminum composite in a daring red hue were used to decorate two halls.
