London studio Heatherwick unveiled its concept for an Airo electric vehicle for IM Motors, which will 'vacuum up pollutants from other cars ''.
Unveiled on April 19, 2021 at the Shanghai Motor Show, the car for the new Chinese car brand IM Motors was designed by Heatherwick as its first car.
Called Airo, the electric vehicle will be equipped with HEPA & ndash; a highly efficient particulate air filtration system that will actively purify pollution. It will have two driving modes: autonomous and driver-driven.
& laquo; Airo & mdash; it's not just another electric car that doesn't pollute the air, ”said Thomas Heatherwick, founder of Heatherwick Studios. “Using the latest HEPA filter technology, it goes a lot further as the vehicle removes air pollutants that other vehicles emit as it moves.”
The car was designed with a convertible saloon with swiveling seats so that it could be reconfigured into a 'multi-functional space'.
In addition to the seats facing each other, the four-leaf table can be deployed to create a dining space, or expanded screen for watching movies or games.
The car's interior can also be turned into a bedroom, as the contoured seats recline completely to create a double bed. In this mode, the glass roof can be made opaque using the “ latest technology '' to create a private space.
“Designed to address the global space shortage, Airo is also a multi-functional space with extra space for dining, working, playing or even sleeping,” a Heatherwick spokesman said.
“ Like a new room for our lives, with a changing look, Airo & mdash; it is a car designed to take us to a cleaner and better future. ”
Together with the car, Heatherwick also developed a charging station.
The stations are intended to be curved installations, resembling a kitchen faucet and will be made of Corten steel, resistant to atmospheric corrosion and will have a retractable charging cable.
The car, due to enter production in 2023, was designed for IM Motors & ndash; an automotive brand created by the Chinese automotive company SAIC Motor, online retailer Alibaba Group and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Group.
