Diversified company Candalepas Associates won the design competition for NGV Contemporary, Australia's largest contemporary art and design gallery. As conceived by the authors, the new attraction will include a central atrium 40 meters high and more than 13,000 square meters. m of exhibition space, including a gallery, a spacious rooftop terrace and a sculpture garden with stunning views of Melbourne.
The building features large arched entrances that are located on the side of the new city park and Southbank Boulevard and Kavanagh Streets. The eastern facade is complemented by a multi-level veranda connecting different parts of the gallery. The entire space is built around the atrium, which will serve to display large-scale works of art. In addition to exhibition spaces, the gallery will provide auditoriums and studios for lectures and master classes, a shop and a cafe overlooking the park. On the roof, the architects plan to make a public terrace and a sculpture garden, which will be accessible from the restaurant and recreation area.
