MDO Rebuilds Former Electronics Factory in Chengdu, China
January 19, 2022
Vanke is a Chinese developer looking for innovative ways to advertise their projects. In the city of Chengdu, the company decided to rebuild a former electronics factory into a multifunctional urban space open to the public. The initiators of the project chose the Hongguang Electronic Tube Factory, which has been producing TV components and voltage measuring instruments since the 1950s. The architectural bureau MDO was involved in the implementation of this large-scale project.
When starting work on this project, the architects studied the factory's products in depth to come up with their own design language using geometric volumes, high-gloss metal finishes and graphic lighting elements. In most of the spaces of the former factory, light has not only an actual lighting function, but also a guiding function: it serves as a kind of guideline that guides visitors. In addition, it often emphasizes the design of a space or even works as a full-fledged art installation. -content/uploads/2022/01/49ebfb3392edf7a573f6bd99730c8606.jpg” width=”727″ height=”485″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-0571743d=”1″ alt=”Photo #6 – В A community center has been opened at a former factory in China” />
In the factory restructuring project, MDO architects experimented as much as possible with finishing materials. Metallic panels sit alongside mirrored surfaces and exposed concrete structures, reminiscent of the building's industrial past. The authors of the project paid special attention to the design of the stairs: the steps are finished with terrazzo, and the wall is decorated with a huge panel of tiles with a floral pattern. By the way, the plant for the panel was not chosen by chance: it grows in these places and has been found in Chinese poetry since the 13th century.
Another attraction for visitors to the building is a cafe with natural bamboo paneling, which refers to the Chinese traditions of the past. In addition to the cafe, the converted factory has opened exhibition spaces, event halls and a training center – all activities are open to the public and have already gained popularity with local residents.
