Design Day 2050: time for new opportunities

At the III International Conference on Industrial Design Design Day 2050, the participants of the All-Russian Design Challenge digital design competition created the concept of a smart device for PJSC « MTS ". In total, more than 80 applications were submitted, the 10 best contestants presented their projects to the design community of the country on the air. The achievements of the participants were highly appreciated by the jury and transferred to MTS for further development and implementation in the company's production cycle. NUST MISIS. Organizer National Center for Industrial Design and Innovation 2050.LAB. The conference is included in the pool of official WDO events in honor of the International Day of Industrial Design, which is celebrated on June 29.

Participants of Design Day 2050 – representatives of the creative industries, top managers of manufacturing companies and holdings, public authorities, the young generation of Russian designers discussed new opportunities for developing the ecosystem of creative industries in modern realities.

Speakers of the strategic session “Design for life: time for new opportunities»discussed how industrial design is developing, what is its role in creating various projects in the modern world and in Russia. Thus, the head of the ANO “Agency for Creative Industries” Gulnara Agamova pointed out that the most important task is for representatives of the creative industries to learn how to build an effective business based on what they create. “It's very important to us that people know that a particular product is made by a particular designer or architect and be proud of them,” she added. First Vice-Rector of NUST MISIS Sergei Salikhov expressed confidence that industrial design is not only in pictures, but also in materials, in the properties of products: “In the process of creating a device, you need to think carefully about how it will look and what materials it is made of.” In turn, MTS Design Director Alexei Chupin, relying on the company's ecosystem experience, confirmed that when a business realizes that it is design that sells a product, then synergy happens. «Design — an engineering discipline, because it is primarily about function, about solutions for people. Therefore, it is necessary to involve designers in product design at the earliest stages of its creation, », — Alexei said. TMH Chief Designer Evgeny Maslov noted that industrial design is not an embellishment, but a human, multidisciplinary glue for all components of complex projects. Ekaterina Morozova, director of the Skolkovo Open University, clarified that design has now become the most important field of professional activity and added value, an integral element of the economy and the manifestation of the quality of life. “For start-ups, design is sometimes a cost driver, and then the rest of the economy counts,” she shared.

“The more industrial design opportunities are used, the more efficiently the business grows. Not used enough yet, but we believe that the situation will change, – noted the CEO of 2050.LAB Daria Topilskaya, who moderated the strategic session.

At the session “Design Horizon 2050” Aleksey Sharshakov, chief designer, and Maxim Chashchin, director of the 2050.LAB design studio, using the OIII project as an example, told how concepts are created, what should be taken into account when implementing the most daring and, at first glance, unrealizable ideas.

< p>Smart system OIII – winner of the prestigious iF DESIGN AWARD. Autonomous unmanned platform that optimizes logistics chains for the transportation of people and goods in real time, preventing “empty” transport to move on the roads. This can make a significant contribution to the development of unmanned vehicles in cities. In addition, an autonomous unmanned platform (chassis) solves the problem of overproduction, which has a negative impact on the environment. Thus, OIII is a fundamentally new system of “last mile” transportation.

Speakers of the design dialogue “Experience and practice of copyright protection in industrial design” discussed how things are now with the legal aspects of the work. Pavel Zinoviev, Deputy General Director of Smirnov Design, said that now profile companies are working on contracts and strategies under the current legislation. The founder of the SCALE design studio, Irina Zhdanova, noted that deposit tools allow you to clearly record who created the object, and this will help you clearly build relationships with clients, as well as earn money together with the client.

Director of the Scientific and Educational Center for Intellectual Property and Digital Economy Digital IP Ekaterina Chukovskaya emphasized that the direction of work is absolutely correct. “Design is the only creative area where the author of a work, design, customer has the opportunity to choose the model of protection of rights that is most convenient. The main thing is that there should be a result of creative activity,” she explained. Ekaterina Chukovskaya spoke in detail about the differences, pros and cons of protection models using copyright, patent and quasi-patent law.

The international block “Projecting Happiness” aroused wide interest of the audience. The expert of the session, industrial designer Kazuaki Suzuki (Japan) talked about how empathy affects the process of designing things and gave examples of mutual influence and penetration of cultures to solve various design problems.

The founder and director of the SXILL design school, Vaineet Raj Kapoor (India), partner of the Professional Excellence Development Agency, spoke about how industrial design is developing in India, showed the design scheme of objects that he created for a long time and uses in his design school. < /p>

At the end, the speakers emphasized the importance of user and designer participation in the design of objects and noted that the design of happiness lies in the synergy of their efforts. The discussion was moderated by Evgeniy Korzhov – WorldSkills Russia Expert in Industrial Design, Associate Professor of the Master's Program «Industrial Design and Engineering» NUST MISIS.

The conference hosted a public defense of the finalists of the All-Russian Design Challenge, an all-Russian digital design competition, with MTS acting as an industrial partner. Last weekend, the guys went through a preparatory workshop with the support of WorldSkills Russia experts from a professional partner – Excellence Development Agencies.

And on June 28, the ten best designers admitted to the final stage received a technical assignment for the creation of a smart device from MTS. On June 29, live at the Design Day 2050 conference, the guys defended their projects in front of leading industry professionals. The winner was Peter Drozdov from the British Higher School of Design. He received a cool case for a portfolio, a cash prize and the possibility of additional points for admission to the Master's program “Industrial Design and Engineering”.
