The 20th century architectural monument featured in Hollywood blockbusters, music videos and the Game of Thrones TV series sold for $ 18 million
House of the Ennis, a project by Frank Lloyd Wright, after restoration
The Ennis House in Los Angeles was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1924 for businessman Charles Ennis and his wife, Mabel, and became the pinnacle of the so-called “textile” style invented by the great American architect in the early 1920s. The structure is assembled from 27 thousand hollow “textile” blocks, consisting of a mixture of gravel, granite and sand, which are strung on rebar and decorated on both sides with a relief pattern in the spirit of Mayan drawings.
The fate of this house was not easy. At first, the architect fell out with the customers, and the Ennis finished the project without him. Then, in the mid-1990s, the building was badly damaged by an earthquake, and ten years later from lingering downpours that hit California. All these years, the building was in disrepair and required a global restoration.
In 2011, House of the Ennis was acquired by American billionaire and philanthropist Ron Burkle for $ 4.5 million. He invested about 17 million more to put the architectural monument in order. When the large-scale restoration was finally completed, he put the historic property up for sale. The starting price was $ 23 million, the final one – $ 18 million. Thus, “House of the Ennis” became the most expensive building Frank Lloyd Wright ever went under the hammer.

The house is located on top of a hill with magnificent views of Los Angeles. It measures approximately 560 sq m and has four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The interiors look majestic and solemn: high ceilings, stained glass windows, long corridors, marble or wood floors, Art Deco furniture, mosaic panels in the dining room by Frank Lloyd Wright himself – here more and more resembles a palace than an ordinary dwelling.
In some episodes of Game of Thrones, House of Ennis acts as Daenerys' palace in Meereen.
It is not surprising that “House of Ennis” is so loved by directors. He has appeared in many Hollywood blockbusters, music videos and TV series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, Lynch's Twin Peaks, Ricky Martin music videos and, among the latter, the Game of Thrones series. where he served as Daenerys' residence in Meereen.
In some episodes of Game of Thrones, House of Ennis acts as a palace Daenerys in Meereen. And in the movie “Blade Runner” by Ridley Scott 1982, the main character Rick Deckard lives in the “House of the Ennis”.
Outside the building, there is a swimming pool that runs along a long corridor that connects the grand and monumental public areas with more modest private areas. It was immediately conceived by Frank Lloyd Wright, but not implemented and was built only in the 1940s, when the owner of the House of Ennis became radio host, actor and producer John Nesbitt. There is also a small fish pond, a garage and a guest house on site.
