Architectural studios BIG and Carlo Ratti Associati have completed the construction of a 280-meter skyscraper in Singapore. The CapitaSpring tower is located in the heart of the financial district of the Asian metropolis on the site of a former parking lot and a street food market. In addition to shops, restaurants, offices and apartments, the building is equipped with green areas that are designed to bring nature to the city. “CapitaSpring is the epitome of a future where culture and nature can coexist and urban landscapes can grow indefinitely vertically, ” says BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.
In total, more than 80,000 plants have been planted on the floors of the skyscraper. The gardens can be seen from the street thanks to the curved façade fragments that reveal the interior of the building. One of the most striking elements is the Green Oasis, a vertical park located in the center of the tower. The four levels are connected by spiral paths and outdoor areas that can serve as a space for work, leisure and sports.
On the roof there is an orchard that provides restaurants and cafes with fresh produce. More than 150 types of fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown here. At the foot of the building, the architects designed a park area with winding paths that lead to a covered area where residents and visitors of the complex can hide from the sun or tropical rain.
