Shanghai duo Neri&Hu created a boutique hotel inspired by traditional Chinese houses with an enclosed patio in Yangzhou City

Neri&Hu architects Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu have created The Walled, a 20-room boutique hotel on the banks of a picturesque lake in Yangzhou. The Shanghai duo combined and integrated existing old buildings and numerous water bodies scattered throughout the territory into a new space for recreation. The concept is based on the traditions of historical Chinese siheyuan houses, which are formed around a quadrangular courtyard oriented to the cardinal points. The perimeter is usually lined with one-story buildings with inward-facing windows.
