Büro Ziyu Zhuang architects designed the church by reimagining traditional temple architecture in a modern way
February 4, 2022An unusual church has appeared in the Chinese mountain resort of Qingdao. Her sharp silhouette cuts through the calm natural space around. The church was designed by the German-Chinese architectural firm Büro Ziyu Zhuang. According to the authors of the project, they sought to combine religious experience and a secular worldview: “We wanted to build a building that would respect the traditions of the past, but at the same time would be directed to the future.”
The design of the church borrows familiar elements from classical church architecture, such as the bell tower with a spire and the general layout of the basilica, but they are all minimalist in design and consist of vertical aluminum “ribs” painted white. The architects of Büro Ziyu Zhuang took the archetype of the church, investing something new in it and rethinking it in a modern way.
The interior of the temple is striking in the abundance of light and its play arising from the design of the “ribs”. The church building stands on the square and seems to rise above it, being the main center of attraction of the town. Behind her, an artificial reservoir was made, which emphasizes the connection of the church with the surrounding mountain nature.
