4 & nbsp; – On February 20, the XXIV Winter Olympic Games are held in Beijing. On February 18, the teams of the ROC (Olympic Committee of Russia) and Sweden will meet in the semifinals. We will be rooting for our team, but for now, let's take a closer look at the ice arena where the match will take place.
Ukesun Sports Center is one of the main ice venues for the 2022 Olympics. The stadium was originally built as a basketball arena for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but was subsequently completely renovated to host hockey matches in 2022. The Beijing studio ZXD architects was engaged in the reconstruction. After the Games, the arena should become the most important winter sports center in Beijing, so the architects decided that its design should immediately evoke associations with ice and snow. This is how the building got an unusual lattice facade resembling snowflakes. /02/4c3b1bcae5fa0c57dec89b4983987392.jpg” width=”728″ height=”503″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-371a4ab7=”1″ alt=”Photo #3 – 2022 Olympics: what the ice palace looks like in Beijing” />
An openwork metal structure with a complex pattern is designed to hide the massiveness of the building itself, to make its appearance visually light and “airy” – like the snowflakes themselves. The corridor looks especially impressive in sunny weather, when the bars cast graphic shadows.
The building has two ground floors and two underground floors: an ice arena for 1900 seats and utility rooms are located in them. Wukesun Sports Center is China's largest ultra-low energy stadium.
