Various Associates has transformed a multi-year abandoned industrial complex into a brightly colored contemporary art school
April 25, 2022
On the outskirts of the Chinese city of Shenzhen, several abandoned industrial buildings have long stood. When the city authorities decided to create an art school in partnership with the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the first thing they remembered was this complex. Various Associates were invited to breathe new life into it. The school was planned to open in the fall, so the deadlines, like the budget, were very tight. Despite this, the architects managed to find a solution and turn the old factory into a modern art center in blue tones. “/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/513d74c79eadb3348652160418d7c306.jpg” width=”728″ height=”486″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-64ca9b5a=”1″ alt=”Art School in an abandoned industrial building” />
The bright cobalt color was not chosen by chance. The complex stands on the banks of the river, and the team wanted to “connect” it with the surrounding landscape in this way. The old facades were covered with sheets of white polycarbonate, which create a spectacular contrast with the blue interiors. /uploads/2022/04/03fc4c8601894e57b13296b65e6e5065.jpg” width=”728″ height=”500″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-64ca9b5a=”1″ alt=”Art School in an abandoned industrial building” />
The architects tried to make the space of the school as comfortable as possible for students. The buildings were interconnected by numerous passages illuminated by sunlight. A sports ground was organized in the courtyard, and the underground garage was turned into an open-air auditorium. -content/uploads/2022/04/5d73ef1e758a5ad71651f7b35460f4dd.jpg” width=”728″ height=”1091″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-64ca9b5a=”1″ alt=”Art School in an abandoned industrial buildings” />
One of the key components of the project was the Hollow wall installation. Made up of removable and curved modular units, the structure was originally designed for Design in bay area 2020 and has now moved to the new school sports ground.
