Reconstruction of the pavilion of the Russian Federation begins in the Giardini Gardens in Venice. The renovation project was developed by the young Russian-Japanese bureau KASA under the guidance of 2050+ studio. The work is scheduled to be completed by the opening XVII Architectural Biennale in May 2021 .
The Russian Federation Pavilion in Venice, 1914.
The Russian Pavilion in Venice was designed by Alexei Shchusev in 1914. The reconstruction is aimed at returning it to the original design of the architect, as well as solving some technical problems.
Shchusev's decision was based on the lightness and permeability of the space, its connection with the surroundings: this is a view of the lagoon from the terrace, and an elegant staircase leading to one of the main alleys. But over time, many openings were closed or blocked, and the dialogue with the outside was lost. The KASA project will help restore this connection and play with the building's historical layering.
The careful restoration will be complemented by several structural changes. Now, if necessary, overlaps between floors can be removed, creating a two-light space. This step opens up new opportunities for exhibiting. The façade will also be restored to its original green hue—a stratigraphic study of the walls helped to recreate it.
The pavilion is being reconstructed as part of the Open? presented by Russia at the 2020 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli. The project is dedicated to the study of the role and importance of institutions in times of global crisis. 2022/04/1b9e50f4aa8ed5c88707a136d7c4f8f0.jpg” width=”728″ height=”971″ class=”lazy-image__image _align-center” data-v-64ca9b5a=”1″ alt=”The Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale will be reconstructed” />
